Born and Bred Dance Theatre
Who are we and what do we do?
Born and Bred Dance Theatre is a professional contemporary dance company based here in Saddleworth! As well as the launch of our weekly classes, the next twelve months will see the creation of a professional dance work and the beginning of our educational outreach work in our local schools and community.
What is contemporary dance?
Contemporary is a style of dance that draws upon modern dance styles and techniques from places like America and Europe. Many off the ideas and techniques in contemporary dance have come from pioneers such as Martha Graham and Merce Cunnigham (google opportunity!). For Born and Bred Dance Theatre contemporary is a style of dance that allows you to explore moving in fun and exciting ways. It is physical, demanding and tough but it is also creative, energetic and little bit soul soothing…
Olivia Burgess (Artistic Director)

Olivia trained in contemporary dance at John Moores University in Liverpool where she completed a BA (hons) Degree in Dance Studies. Whilst at John Moores Olivia was an Educational Outreach Worker in JMUpstart Dance Company (artistic director Angie Walton) where she managed and facilitated outreach projects. As well as more traditional contemporary training Olivia has worked somatically, looking at improvisation, contact improvisation and Skinner Release Technique. She has toured with the Nottingham based company, 'Dance Equation' led by Rebecca Hart. The company specialises in contemporary performances for children combining maths and dance to create an interactive and educational show. She has also worked with the company on outreach projects and has choreographed for 'Nottz Danzers', a youth company founded by Dance Equation. From there Olivia came to Manchester and worked with Hullabaloo Dance Theatre on their 'Insistent Foot Routine’ tour as a performer and company manager and went on to work with True Motion Dance Company based in Salford. Most recently she joined Kate Jackson Projects over in Warrington to work and perform on the 'Household' project. Alongside her performance work Olivia has facilitated many community projects and delivered workshops around the North West. A keen educator in dance she is really excited about Born and Bred weekly classes which she shall be facilitating!
